2012-05-17 : Chess SA Wins Bid to Host 2014 World Youth Chess Championships                                                                 
CHESSAStatement by Chessa : We are extremely delighted to announce that we, Chess South Africa, will be the hosts of the 2014 World Youth Chess Championships.

The World Youth Chess Championship is a chess competition for girls and boys under the age of 18 years. The first predecessor of the youth championship was the Cadet Championship which commenced officially in 1974 in France.

GM Garry Kasparov and Julian Hodgson were some of the young players who represented their countries in 1976 in the U12 section. In 1977 it was officially recognized by FIDE as a World Championship for Cadets under the age of 17 years. In 1981 the first women's championship for U16 was played. However, in 1997 the name of the tournament was changed to the World Youth Chess Championships. The next WYCC will be held in Slovenia in November 2012.

In 2011, CHESSA was awarded the bid to host the WYCC in 2014. The province which was chosen to host this prestigious event is the alluring, magnificent and mesmerizing multi-cultural pride and joy destination flanked by warm Indian Ocean and soaring peaks, Kwa Zulu Natal or the Zulu Kingdom.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) comprises of President of CHESSA, Emelia Ellapen, Executive Director, Mike Pon, Director of Finance, Ewan Obelholzer, General Secretary, Bridgette Burger, Pr & Media Director, Gerri Engelman, Reg Hoddinott, Our partners include government agencies or parastatals, Kwa Zulu Natal Convention Bureau, EThekwini municipality, City of Durban, amongst others.

The LOC met over the past weekend in Durban where the venue and pre-planning of the budget and activities were discussed and finalised. The WYCC will bring together over 1300 players from all over the world including Grand Masters and some of the world’s top young players.
Over the following months, CHESSA will be involved in a public relations and media campaign internationally to promote the WYCC.
